Oil Spill Threatens Mauritians

Not only will the massive oil spill off off the coast of Mauritius have long-term impacts on the island’s fragile ecosystems, it will also threaten the nation’s efforts to use ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs, reports Admire Ndhlovu for Southern African News Features. The Japanese operator of the ship responsible has offered to pay at least $9.4 million towards the clean-up, as compared to the $34 million Mauritius has asked for. The spill has been described as the biggest ecological disaster ever to happen in the Indian Ocean
